The word τεκνοτροφέω (“I bring up children”) was available, and Paul used it in 1 Timothy 5:10 to communicate this idea, while by contrast he used the verbal form τεκνογονέω (“I bear children”) in 1 Timothy 5:14 for the bearing of children.263 The significance of διά is also a matter of debate. E. F. Scott tried to soften the scandal of the verse by saying that a woman shall be saved “in spite of” or “even though” having children.264 He excludes any notion of women being saved “through” having children.
